Why City Ballet of Cleveland?

Positive. Resilient. Focused. Kind. Intelligent.

These are just a few of the words that have been used to describe City Ballet of Cleveland, the Cleveland non-profit that sees dancers as more than just accomplished technicians but views dancers as community leaders who inspire their peers and make a difference in the lives of so many people. The company is committed to training well-rounded individuals who are examples of poise, determination, discipline, strength, and grace.

Opportunities

City Ballet of Cleveland strives to make dance accessible for all students who walk through our doors. Not only does the company provide opportunities for all dancers to shine, but also exposes youth in the surrounding communities to classical ballet and dance as an art form and as an avenue of self-expression. Each spring, the company invites dancers ages 10-20 from across Northeast Ohio to audition for a year-long company contract, in which the dancers are exposed to a variety of dance styles and techniques. Throughout the years, dancers have worked with guest artists and choreographers, including the internationally acclaimed Laura Alonso. In the fall, the company holds another round of auditions for its Uniquely Cleveland Nutcracker performance involving dancers, parents, and guest artists from Northeast Ohio and beyond. In the spring, the company holds an audition for its story ballet. This audition is open to Cleveland City Dance students and provides dancers the unique opportunity to perform for their peers during the annual outreach program.

Professionalism

City Ballet of Cleveland holds its dancers to a high standard of excellence. This youth company displays polish and professionalism. Though the company prepares its dancers for a professional performance career, the tools these students learn in dance extend beyond the studio. Dance teaches discipline, focus, commitment, and perseverance that students can apply to any area of study they wish to pursue. Dance builds confidence and poise that can help young people navigate life as they enter adulthood. Through the study of dance, students learn that anything is possible if they remain driven, determined, and positive. For these reasons, many dancers continue as company members throughout their high school career regardless of their professional aspirations.

City Ballet of Cleveland is committed to achieving its mission of fostering every dancer’s ability, while promoting a love of dance through professional training, performance, and community engagement. When you attend a City Ballet of Cleveland performance or event, not only do you experience a high level of professionalism, you feel as though you have become part of the dance family. You feel the excitement of the performers on stage as well as the energy through the entire theater. You witness how the dancers encourage those around them to achieve greatness when you see an interaction between the senior dancers and their younger counterparts.

Confidence

The company champions the successes of all its dancers and welcomes students with open arms. M.E. Evans, the parent of a current company dancer says, “The instruction is excellent and nurturing, with a focus on classical technique that promotes self-confidence and expertise. Over the years, City Ballet of Cleveland has become my daughter’s second home.” Another parent praises City Ballet of Cleveland for teaching “discipline, grace, and determination. Our daughter very much looks forward to her weekly classes at the studio with her teachers and friends.” For many, City Ballet of Cleveland is the place where dancers go to see their friends, to express themselves, and to see their dreams realized.
